Conference Tips

- Plan to eat lunch somewhere other than the Washington Hilton. There's a snack bar right next to the vendor hall, but it's extremely expensive, with a limited menu. Walk a few blocks down toward DuPont Circle for lunch and enjoy something far better! A few blocks east of the hotel in the Adams-Morgan neighborhood (along 18th Street), you'll find a wide variety of restaurant choices: see http://adamsmorgan.net/restaurants/.
- If you're really cheap, walk down the hill to the Safeway grocery store. You can get a decent deli sandwich, soda, and bag of chips for <$5.
- If you walk down the hill toward Dupont Circle, you will find that most of the restaurants are on the opposite side of the street from the hotel. One exception: La Tomate is on the same side of the street as the hotel. It has great food and a nice atmosphere, but it's not a place to get a cheap meal. (Its prices are probably average for DC.) (Recommendation by Don Hawkins, Information Today)
- If you're a first timer at this conference, don't miss the "Wednesday Evening Session: Digi Tech Forum: Looking at Dead & Emerging Technologies". It's a fun evening and Scott Brandt, the host, always gets the ball rolling. (Moderator's note: one of the sessions that everyone will be talking about the next day!)
- If you collect too much stuff, you might want to mail it home rather than carry it. There's a post office just down the street from the Hilton. Go out the lower door (where the tourist information desk is), turn left down the hill, then turn right and the post office is almost on the corner, next to the liquor store.
- Need cash? There is an ATM in the downstairs lobby of the Hilton. It's between the stairs & the information desk.
- There is a coat check window on the same level as the CIL Conference. It's near the cafe and registration desks. Around 9am and 5pm the lines are long, so alter your timing or be prepared to wait a few minutes.
